Alexa Mendes
Alexa Mendes is a 16-year-old student in her junior year of high school. She was named Student-of-the-Year at both her elementary and middle schools, and continues to strive for excellence today. She has a 4.0 GPA and is greatly involved in her community. At her church, Alexa helps with religious education, has been a leader for the youth group, and is a proclaimer of the word. At school, Alexa loves to be a part of the ASB class and was even elected as Sophomore Director, thus planning her school’s winter formal for around 1,000 people as a sophomore. She was also elected as school president at her high school and now oversees the ASB program.
Having played basketball throughout her youth, she has also won various championships and ultimately made her school’s Varsity basketball team both freshman and sophomore years. As a freshman, her team won the regional championship for the first time in her school’s history and then once again made it to the regional finals in her sophomore year.
Additionally, Alexa has been a Girl Scout for more than 11 years, earning her Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. For her Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn (equivalent to a Boy Scout becoming an Eagle Scout), Alexa tackled the issue of stress. Identifying the root cause of stress as the lack of awareness of healthy ways to manage stress, Alexa compiled 8 quick-and-easy stress relieving techniques and led her team to transform them into booklets (in French, English, and Spanish) and accompanying videos. She then led a team to present these techniques and the availability of these resources to the 1800 students at her school. Knowing stress is a global issue, Alexa and her team members shared these techniques with people across the world. All of these resources continue to remain accessible for free on her website, www.breathetorelieve.weebly.com.
